Gemini reads yesterday's unread emails and sends you a summary every morning

Google Workspace Studio lets you build small automations by describing them. A ready-made one uses Gemini to summarise your unread emails each weekday morning and post the summary to you in Google Chat. You can also plug in your own custom Gemini 'Gem' to draft replies.

  1. 1
    ☐

    Open Workspace Studio

On a computer go to studio.workspace.google.com and sign in with your work Google account. If it shows an error, your account or admin settings don't support it yet.

  2. 2
    ☐

    Start a new flow

Click to create a flow. Choose 'Describe it with AI', a template, or start from scratch. The easiest is a template.

  3. 3
    ☐

    Set the starter

Step 1 is the starter: 'On a schedule'. Set it to every weekday at [8 a.m.].

  4. 4
    ☐

    Add the summary step

Step 2: 'Recap unread emails', set to 'Yesterday'. Gemini writes the summary. You can leave the settings as they are.

  5. 5
    ☐

    Send it to yourself

Step 3: 'Notify me in Chat'. The message box already holds the summary from step 2.

  6. 6
    ☐

    Test, then turn on

Run a test. Note that tests do real actions. When happy, turn the flow on.

  7. 7

    Optional: add your Gem

To draft replies in your style, make a custom Gem in Gemini (grounded in Google Drive files) and add it as a step, as Tom's Guide describes.

💬 Copy-paste prompts

Tap Copy prompt, paste it into your AI (Grok, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini), then replace the [yellow bits] with your own details.

💬 Describe it with AI
Every weekday at 8 a.m., look at my unread emails from yesterday. Summarise them in Google Chat as: 1) needs a reply today, 2) can wait, 3) newsletters and notifications. One line per email with the sender. Don't reply to or delete anything.
💬 Gem instructions (for draft replies)
You draft email replies for [name] at [business]. Tone: [friendly, brief, British English]. Use the attached Drive documents for our prices (MYR), policies and FAQs. If the answer isn't in the documents, write 'I'll check and come back to you' rather than guessing. Never promise discounts or dates.
