A ChatGPT 'dot' that keeps an eye on things and only pings you when it matters

A dot is OpenAI's new always-on ChatGPT assistant. One user's tip: give it the things you care about but don't want to keep checking (new job posts, flight prices, a project) and let it tell you only when something is really worth your attention.

🎯 What you'll have at the endYou'll set up your dot as a calm watchman: it checks the things you choose and only messages you when there is something worth acting on.

  1. 1
    ☐

    Create your dot

Open ChatGPT and choose dots (on the desktop app, a desktop browser or the phone app). Follow the short introduction, give your dot a name and pick how it looks. You can keep the defaults.

  2. 2
    ☐

    Connect only what it needs

When asked, connect plugins (links to your other apps, such as email or calendar). Only connect the apps this job needs. You can add more later from your dot's profile.

  3. 3
    ☐

    Write your watch list

For each thing, write: where to look, what counts as 'worth telling me', and how often to check.

  4. 4
    ☐

    Give it the watch-list prompt

Paste the prompt below. Be clear about the line between 'tell me' and 'stay quiet'.

  5. 5
    ☐

    Choose where it pings you

Ask it to message you in ChatGPT, or in Slack or Teams if you connected them (open your dot's profile and select Add).

  6. 6
    ☐

    Tune it after a week

Tell it which alerts were useful and which were noise. It keeps notes and gets better.

💬 Copy-paste prompts

Tap Copy prompt, paste it into your AI (Grok, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini), then replace the [yellow bits] with your own details.

💬 Watch list
Please watch these for me and only tell me when it really matters:
1. [What] at [where]. Tell me when: [e.g. a new 3-bedroom condo under MYR 600,000 in Mont Kiara is listed]. Check [daily].
2. [What] at [where]. Tell me when: [e.g. KUL to London return under MYR 3,000 for dates in March]. Check [twice a day].
3. [What] at [where]. Tell me when: [condition].
Stay quiet otherwise. Each alert: one line on what changed, the link, and why it's worth my time. Never buy, book or contact anyone without asking me. Confirm the schedule back to me.

⚠️ Tips & common mistakes

🌟 Why it's worth it

💡 Why it mattersPeople struggle to know what to use an always-on assistant for. 'Watch this for me' is the easiest win and saves constant checking.
🏷️ Real exampleThe poster's dot watches freelance job boards for jobs that truly match, and flight prices for a genuinely good deal, not a USD 10 change.
